They boast an average graduation rate slightly above the Florida state average and 95.7 percent of their teachers are at least in their third year of teaching, according to Niche.
The other high school in town, Sunlake High School, was rated the No. 4 best public high school in Pasco County. Like Land O’ Lakes High School, Sunlake High School offers AP programs. They also have a gifted program. Sunlake ranks in the top 30 percent of all Florida public high schools, per Niche. The school received an “A” rating by the Florida Department of Education in 2018.
Additionally, Land O’ Lakes has a pair of highly-rated charter schools for students who are not yet old enough for high school: Countryside Montessori and Imagine School at Land O’ Lakes. Countryside Montessori was ranked in the top 4 percent in the state for elementary education and top 2 percent for middle school education based on their 2018 FSA scores. Imagine School at Land O’ Lakes is six-time A-rated public charter.
The city is home to five “A-” rated elementary/middle schools. There are also two private schools within its borders: Academy at the Lakes and Land O’ Lakes Christian School.
When the kids go off to college, they won’t have to travel far. The University of South Florida is only about a 20 minute drive from Land O’ Lakes. It takes less than two hours to drive to the University of Florida. Even Florida State and the University of Miami are only four hours away. First opened in opened in December of 1940, Dupree Gardens is an abandoned botanical gardens theme park in Land O’ Lakes. “Florida’s Original Roadside Tourist Attraction” was once 25 acres large and had restaurants, electric-powered boats and even a gift shop. However, there is not much left of the original park that was once described in the Florida Times-Union in 1942 as:
“Snapdragons, poppies; pansies and iris; violets, sweet [alyssum] and candytuft; calendulas, delphinium and narcissus – great medallions of them on the evergreen carpets of grass – all these are there with their yearly vindication of the sweet promise of new life and new hope.”
But it is still a prime tourist destination.
Visitors can marvel at its original ticket booth and imagine what it was like for the more than 40,000 people who visited the park in its opening year. The area around is still quite beautiful, but far more developed than it was in the ‘40s. Make a point to stop and take some pictures!
Cypress Creek Preserve
Cypress Creek Preserve is where all of your recreational enjoyment needs can be fulfilled. If you are into bicycling, roller blading, camping, equestrian, fishing or hiking then this is the place for you! Cypress Creek Preserve is open from sunrise to sunset and is 7,400 acres in size. There are nearly 20 miles of trails for those hiking, riding horses, inline skating and/or biking. You can even request to camp there!
FloridaNatureCoast.org describes the preserve as “a good variety of Florida natural communities … from large flatwood prairies to low-lying swamps and hammocks.” This is another must-visit location.
With parts brushing up against the southwestern most border of the city, the Suncoast Trail is 42 miles in length and spans three Florida counties. The majority of the paved trail is in Pasco County (home of Land O’ Lakes). Amenities include a pair of wildlife viewing areas and the trail even connects to J.B. Starkey Wilderness Park. It is the perfect place to go if you want to walk, run or bike.

Located on 21329 Carson Drive and open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, the Land O’ Lakes Farmers Market is a must-visit spot. They have a whole lot of fun activities to choose from, including darts, pool tables, a large dance floor, live music and more. You can even host a birthday party there!

Get Your Sports Fix Near Land O’ Lakes, Florida
If you are a huge sports fan looking for a great place to live, it is hard to find a better location than the Tampa, Florida area. There’s no better place in that area than Land O’ Lakes, a city of a little more than 35,000 residents about 20 miles north of Tampa’s epicenter.
Aside from the cornucopia of parks, activities and bars the city has to offer (not to mention the great school system), you are also close enough to the big city to experience all the sports Tampa has to offer.
The Tampa Bay Rays play about 45 minutes away from Land O’ Lakes at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg and are definitely worth checking out. The Rays are one of the best teams in Major League Baseball right now and you can easily score a ticket to see them play. Even if you are a fan of an out-of-town team or looking at Land O’ Lakes as a winter home, some top teams from around the country like the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox play in town regularly.
If you come to Land O’ Lakes in February and March, there are nine MLB teams that play their spring training games within two hours of the city: the Rays, Red Sox, Atlanta Braves, Toronto Blue Jays, Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, Baltimore Orioles, Minnesota Twins, New York Mets, Miami Marlins, St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Astros, and Washington Nationals. The Tampa Bay Lightning, who play less than 20 miles away from Land O’ Lakes at Amalie Arena in Tampa, have been the best team in the National Hockey League over the past two seasons. When football season rolls around you must check out the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Raymond James Stadium in Tampa is actually the closest major sports facility to Land O’ Lakes at about 18 miles away. The Buccaneers have a newfound optimism after hiring head coach Bruce Arians after the 2018 season and have playoff aspirations in 2019 and beyond. The are led by former No. 1 overall pick and quarterback Jameis Winston.
If college sports are your thing, you’re in luck! The University of South Florida is about 20 minutes away from Land O’ Lakes. The University of Florida is less than two hours away. Both the Bulls and the Gators have quality football and basketball programs as well as a plethora of other sports to choose from.
