There are several reasons why Dade City, Florida should be at the top of your list of best places to move to whether you are already in the state or not. The affordable cost of living may be the biggest asset the city has to offer, but it is certainly not the only one.
What’s a city with nothing to look at, right? You need some landmarks, some places to be, in order to truly be a happy resident. Luckily for those who call Dade City home, they have a few options. Here are three Dade City landmarks you must visit while in town.
3 Dade City Landmarks You Must See
Hugh Embry Library
Located at 14215 Fourth Street, Hugh Embry Library isn’t just your normal run of the mill library. It was originally opened in 1904 and has been relocated multiple times in its existence, but it has been in its current location since 1963 and was completely renovated in the 1980s and reopened at more than 7,000 square feet in 1991.
The library was started by Hugh Embry, who developed the idea upon his return to Dade City to battle an illness. As the story goes, Embry had already read all the books within his possession and wanted to broaden his horizons. He collected money from family and friends (about $50) and bought every book he could with those funds. Upon Embry’s death, the books became property of the Pasco Library Association.
The Edwinola is one of the most famous landmarks in Florida. Once a hotel, this historic building from 1912 is now part of a retirement residence. In 1975 it was turned into a restaurant before becoming a retirement home in the 1980s. Here’s how they describe the facility on their website.
“The name ‘Edwinola’ is a combination of the original owners names, Edwin and Lola Gasque. Since it’s construction, it has been a favorite destination of travelers coming to the Dade City, FL area. The Edwinola would eventually go on to serve as a private residence, a restaurant, and in the 1980’s, it was turned into a retirement community.”
You can find it at 14235 Edwinola Way.
Pasco County Courthouse
Located at 37918 Meridian Avenue, the Pasco County Courthouse was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 2006. First built in 1909, the courthouse has underwent significant renovations in the mid 1990s. CourthousesofFlorida.com describes the building as:
“The imposing brick structure is a fine example of Neo-Classical design. Although a new courthouse has been built, the old courthouse is still used for county offices.”
Fun fact: The courthouse has a yearly Valentine’s Day tradition. The Pasco County Clerk offers wedding ceremonies free of charge! Isn’t that a nice perk.
