The Hudson area was originally inhabited by the Tocobaga people. Hudson was first settled in the 1850s and incorporated as a town in 1927. The name "Hudson" was chosen to honor Captain Charles Hudson, who brought settlers to the area.
The town's early growth was primarily due to the construction of a railroad, the St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line. Hudson remained primarily a farming community until the late 20th century, when it began to develop into a suburban area for nearby Tampa and St. Petersburg.
